In theory, when you have the hubs in the free position and the vehicle in 2wd, it takes less force to move the vehicle over the ground. This is because the front wheels are only being pushed around and not the rest of the front half of the drive train. Also, in theory, you are supposed to get less tyre wear because you are decreasing the drag. Fourtrak will tow ton in the handbook IIRC, but i've seen boys (in Dromara actually) towing 25ft trailers stacked with round bails front to back driving up and down the b'hinch road all the time. Independent models also came with manual hubs, however i believe it was only available on some of the later "special editions" The Independent. Solution: This is very common on the Fourtrak, and it's being caused by a loose nut that holds together the sliding synchro hubs and cones. Annoyingly, for such a small fault, this is a time-heavy fix. You can order a replacement nut from our parts list easily enough, but then you have to remove the gearbox.
